Middle Hongu Khola-B Hydropower Project was first identified in 2015 A.D during the developing process of small to medium size hydropower projects through the private sector as an independent power producer to meet increasing power demand from the private sector encouraged by the policy of the Nepal Government issued through Nepal Electricity Authority [NEA] and Department of Electricity Development [DoED]. The feasibility study of the project (22.90 MW) was completed by Units Engineering Private Limited in the year 2017 A.D. Now, the project has been owned by Gaurishankar Power Developer Limited.
Middle Hongu Khola-B Hydroelectric Project is situated in Solukhumbu District, Eastern Development Region (Pradesh no 1). The project area lies between 27° 29′ 09″ N and 27° 30′ 51″ N latitude and 86°48′ 26” E and 86° 51′ 34″ E longitudes. The headworks of the project lie on the right bank of the Hongu Khola and the headrace tunnel and powerhouse are proposed on the left bank of the Hongu Khola. The alignment comprises of headrace tunnel and steel penstock pipe.
The generated power will be evacuated by connecting it to the Tingla substation through a 132kV transmission line. The length of the transmission line will be about 20 km. The energy will be generated at 11 kV and it will be stepped up at 132kV level. It is located towards the North-East of Kathmandu and from Kathmandu to Salleri is about 551km which is all season black topped road further about 20km from Salleri to Sotang is a gravel road which is the main access road from Kathmandu to the project site. Further, around a 5 km access road is to be constructed to make the powerhouse, headworks, and surge shaft accessible.

Civil Works, the tendering process has been completed, and the contract has been awarded to the Makalu Builders and Suppliers Pvt. Ltd. The H.M. works Part-A (i.e., gates, stoplogs, hoisting system, trash rack and embedded parts) has been awarded to Nepal Hydro & Electric Limited. The tendering process for the H.M. works Part-B (i.e., Penstock) and E.M. works is in the process of selection.
The total area of land required for the permanent structure of the project is about 80 ropanies and the land to be leased for the temporary structure is 19.66 ropanies. Almost land required has been acquired by the company, a few of them are in process of registration pass and the government land leasing process has almost been completed. The approval process of the revised EIA has been completed and subsequently, tree- cutting approval has also been granted from cabinet decision concerning the uses of national forest area against the proposal initiated by the ministry of forest.
The Civil Contractor has been mobilized to the site dated on September 2021 immediately after the contract was awarded and other contractors related to the remaining civil works and H.M. works Part-B is yet to be finalized. The Contractor of H.M. works Part-a will be mobilized after the start of the structural works at Headworks.
